API is a boutique mutual fund family that is proudly building on a financial services heritage that has endured for over four generations.

API President, David D. Basten, founded API in 1985 with his father-in-law, Aubrey L. Mason.

In 1927, Aubrey Mason's father, Walter G. Mason, had started Scott, Horner & Mason, which later became Mason & Lee. In 1957, Walter Mason's nephew, Raymond "Chip" Mason, joined Mason & Lee. Chip Mason left in 1962 to launch Mason & Co. which merged with Legg & Co. in 1970 to form Legg Mason, and in 1980, acquired Mason & Lee.

At API, the tradition of family involvement and commitment continues. Founder David D. Basten serves as President & Chief Investment Officer. His sons and daughters are also involved in the business. David M. Basten is a Managing Director, Austin Duff Basten is Chief Compliance Officer, Brentz Basten East serves as a Portfolio Manager and Daughter-in-law Katy Basten works as a Regional Sales Associate.
